We are all uNbreakABLE

I live overseas and Netflix is now available worldwide in over 190 countries. So…..I’ve had two Christmases in the span of 3 Weeks? Yep, just checking. Anyways. I have conformed to the America social norms and binged watched a series for my first time. This show was the comedy show Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt starring Ellie Kemper. It is extremely stupid yet so entertaining, excruciatingly vulgar yet well written and dumb yet hilarious. Despite its idiocy, the show has surprisingly taught me a number of life lessons! The most important one was in the very beginning of the show when Kimmy shares her “10 seconds at a time rule”.

Sometimes in life when times get difficult or when you find tasks to be too hard, you just want to give up; throw in the towel and go home. At some point in life, we all feel like this. I never had a consistent way to compensate with this feeling with a positive outcome; until I met a fictitious character called Kimmy Schmidt. She taught me, that when I feel in such a way take time, take the moment and take life at 10 seconds at a time. By the end of each 10 seconds, she elaborates that your predicament should be less painful than it was 10 seconds prior. And the next 10 seconds should have the same result, and the next one, and the next one……

Why I believe that this rule is so effective is because it allows you to be conscious of your “not so great” situation. To elaborate, when we often feel discouraged, we want to leave, get out the moment, and find a way to flee from our troubles. But whilst doing so, you are only proliferating magnitude of your emotions as all your succeeding actions are an outcome of the situation. Kimmy’s rule, however, allows you to be conscious of the moment and reside in the “now”. You are not doing anything else but counting. All that matters is your breath and what number you are on. By a couple of countdowns, chances are that you have settled down and your predicament is gone. Or if you are like me, you have been completely distracted by the counting!

I am a strong believer that the mediums of television and film have an influential impact on our societies and personalities. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, as stupid as the concept of the show may be (yet it is Emmy nominated #NoH8), taught me quite a valuable lesson. Around all the madness and vulgarity that goes on, this television series is completely inspiring, empowering and funny. Kimmy’s “unbreakable” personality empowers women, it empowers those who don’t believe in themselves’, she empowers minorities, and above all she is an inspiration to anyone who feels like life can beat you.
